Lesson 1
# Introduction to ChatGPT To get started, download the official ChatGPT app from the App Store and follow the steps to create an account. For the best experience, I recommend subscribing to the **$20**/month Plus Subscription, though it’s not required—most features are available on the free version: Look for this icon 👆🏼 to ensure you’re downloading the right app, as there are several copycats. The official app is developed by OpenAI. Once inside the app, here’s what you’ll see: - **1, App Menu** This is where you’ll find all your previous conversations and access your settings. We’ll explore this later. - **2, Chat Tools** These let you manage the current chat, such as sharing or deleting it. The `4.0` refers to the AI model, but you probably won’t need to adjust this. - **3, New Chat** If you want to start a fresh conversation, use this icon. It’s a good idea to start a new chat whenever the context changes (more on this later). - **4, Add** You can add photos or files to provide extra context in a conversation. We’ll dive into this feature later on. - **5, Message** This is where you type your message, just like in Messenger or iMessage. Only here, you’re chatting with an AI. - **6, Audio** Tap this to speak your message instead of typing. We’ll cover this feature in more detail later, but feel free to give it a try! ``` If you'd prefer you can also use ChatGPT on a desktop computer by visiting chatgpt.com ``` *** ## Task #1 Today, we’ll get you familiar with ChatGPT in a simple way. I’ve written a prompt to help you get started. When you click the Try button, it will open the app and copy the text to your clipboard. Once you’re in ChatGPT, just tap the message field and paste the prompt: > Tell me an interesting fact about the America's Cup sailing race. This will give you a sense of how ChatGPT responds. Feel free to continue the conversation by asking follow-up questions like you would with a real person. Let me know if you discover anything fun!

Lesson 2
# Writing prompts, plus rockets and a cookie recipe 🚀 🍪 Knowing **when** to engage AI is biggest challenge in using the tool effectively — in this sense you have to unlearn what you know of Google (or finding facts in an encyclopedia). Google is still the right place when you need a **fact**... the name of an actor or the currency used in Iceland. AI is best when you have a **question**, or the beginnings of a thought or interest. Imagine AI as a really smart debating partner. **Try something like:** > What are the arguments for a better definition of the "welfare of the child" principal in the court system? ## Follow-on The real beauty comes in the follow-up discussion, which is something Google cannot do. For example, in the same chat you might continue talking, as if you would with a person. Remember, you don't need to worry about spelling or formatting, or contain any context from the last thing you said. Let it flow... > are there any high profile cases where this has been controversial? Of course this doesn't need to be about heavy topics, I quite often take the same approach with dinner: The words you use to engage with AI is called a **"prompt"** and the way you ask questions is important. You'll develop this as you go, but the key is to be clear with any expectations. > explain the speed of light using household objects in a way that a 5 year old could understand *** Throughout the day try and be mindful of any time you have a question — and try to ask GPT. Let me know any interesting questions you come up with. Here are some weird questions I've had recently: - If a rocket was landing on the moon right now, would you see it with the naked eye? - Do large animals have large cells and smaller animals smaller cells or do all animals have the same size cells? - I've got a Japanese whetstone here. It's got a 1000 and a 3000 grade. Which one do I start with? - Austin is swinging in a swing and when his legs are down he goes slow and when his legs are up he goes fast. What physical properties are at play here? - Any recipes that can use overripe bananas? They were **really** good. [Recipe](https://chatgpt.com/share/670da6df-bc14-8009-aec2-8a781a9f2899)

Lesson 3
# Getting personal and saving £000's on a fitness coach 💰 Over time, ChatGPT learns about you and can offer responses that are more personalized. Generally it will pick up stuff like your tone of voice and nature of your topics, but you can also feed it some personal information — which can be very helpful. In my case, it knows the boys' names 👦🏼👦🏼 and that I'm gluten intolerant 🍝 which allows it to provide more relevant suggestions, such as offering gluten-free recipe ideas or tailoring responses to include the kid's interests. So today we're going to add some basic information about you so that GPTs responses are a bit more useful. Then we're going to explore how ChatGPT handles **tasks** not just questions. ## Saying g’day 👋🏼 > I'd like to introduce myself, so you know a bit more about me You'll see that ChatGPT isn't always going to try and give you an answer, hopefully in response to the above it'll give you an opportunity to elaborate. Today's task (a little later on) will be about your physical health, so we might want to begin by providing some basic details that might be useful in that area. **Now write...** > I recently turned 72 but I am in excellent physical health You should see this next to the reply: The `Memory updated` pill shows up whenever ChatGPT stores unique information about you — which is what we want. If you're worried about privacy, this can be managed and deleted later if you need. In contrast to some of the other popular AI tools like Gemini (Google) or Meta AI, ChatGPT is very secure and privacy focussed. Let's continue to add anything else you think is relevant. Maybe this: > I am recovering from a knee replacement last year, so I need to go easy on my knees ## 🏋🏼♀️ Get to the gym! Today's task will be to switch things up in your usual gym routine. **We'll get AI to create a workout schedule** then we'll tweak it, remembering that it'll already use some of your personal details from above. ``` When asking GPT to create something for you — like a plan or a document — it's useful to be as descriptive as possible about the type of thing you expect. This is the golden rule with AI: if you expect a certain result it's better to be clear than polite. ``` So let's try this: > Write a gym routine for this week. I plan to go 4 times for 1 hour per session. I'd like to focus on general cardio and leg strength #### Make it your own By now GPT should have written you a fairly comprehensive schedule. But the beauty of AI — as we learned [yesterday](#day-2) — is that you can continue the conversation. So even though it's probably given you a great starting point, you could try these responses: - That looks too easy, step it up - What is a "Bird-dogs" exercise? - I'd like day 3 to involve more core exercises - I don't have access to a rowing machine (or, involve more free weights) - ...you get the idea! At some point in the future you might want to come back to this chat by pressing the top left menu and finding the routine. From here you can give additional feedback to continue the conversation, like this: > 30 second planks were too easy, can you increase their duration 🎉 **Congrats!** Now you have your own personal trainer.

Lesson 4
# Exploring deeper conversations (without getting too personal) In the last couple of lessons, we covered how to write effective prompts, the value of follow-up questions, and how to use personal details for better results. These lessons have been very input-focused — today, we’re shifting focus to the **output**. ## Conversation starters 💬 While I’ve mentioned that AI is great when you have a **question**, it’s even better if you engage it before you even know what that question is. ``` Instead of waiting until you have a burning question, I encourage you to engage ChatGPT when you have the beginnings of a thought or a topic you want to explore more deeply. ``` I do this in my own life when I encounter topics that I don’t fully understand or have a strong opinion about (yet). Here are some of my own recent musings: - I’m really interested in the idea that previous generations didn’t have many photographs to document their lives, compared to my kids who have tens of thousands of pictures - It feels like US culture is very preoccupied with identity politics vs what I see in Australia - My son’s 8 year old friend has unfettered access to YouTube. This can’t be good? Engaging AI with half-formed thoughts can be incredibly useful for helping you develop a better understanding and form your own opinions. Using what we’ve learned about follow-up questions — this is the perfect opportunity to ask “dumb” questions when diving into unfamiliar topics. Often, you'll find that AI responds by asking thought-provoking questions or by steering the conversation in unexpected but enlightening directions💡 ## But first, privacy 🔒 In the last lesson, we talked about adding personal details to enrich responses. However, you may not always want to openly discuss certain topics "on the record." For situations like these, we have **Temporary Chats**. Pressing the `ChatGPT 4o` title in the app, you can choose the Temporary Chat option which will start a new chat, but will not save your conversation to the sidebar or to 3rd party analysis. You don’t need to use this, but it’s here if you need peace of mind. ## Challenge your opinion 🤯 Today’s task is to discuss a recent court case. The best way to start is to provide the AI with enough context to give a meaningful response. A good beginning might be: > I am a {job role} for a {entity type} in {country}. I deal with {case types}. I'd like to discuss a recent case If you’re not comfortable, you can just use a case you heard about in the news. From here, you can take the conversation in various directions, but I suggest using AI to **challenge your perspective**. Once you’ve initiated the discussion, a good follow-up might be: > Provide two opposing arguments Or even: > Help me understand the perspective of the defendant Maybe even > What would the wrong verdict look like? *** Ultimately, AI cannot (and should not) provide legal or professional advice, but what it excels at is helping you solidify your own position by exploring different viewpoints. As a lighthearted end, you could ask AI what perspective David Attenborough might have had on the case — just for fun. 🐒🎙️

Lesson 5
# Talk it out We’ve done plenty of writing, now it’s time to start **talking**! 🎙️ Interacting with an AI through speech is a unique and sometimes uncanny experience, so get ready to question reality a little. 🤖 But first, let’s say hello. 👋 ## 🚀 Getting started Before diving in, take a moment to read through these steps. First, open a new chat and select the voice icon instead of typing into the message box: Once you see the blue orb, tap the settings icon at the top right: From here you can choose from a range of overly-enthusiastic voices. I use **Juniper**, but **Vale** sounds delightful. Once you choose a voice, tap `Done` and start talking. ## When to use audio Audio AI gives you the same kind of responses as text chat, but in a faster, more conversational format. It’s perfect for lighthearted discussions or quick questions that don’t require deep reflection. ``` Use audio AI on the occasion that you'd phone a (really smart) friend to ask a question ``` You might want to start with something simple, like: > 🗣 I’ve been learning how to use AI for the last 5 days straight. I think I’m doing pretty well! ## Mind your Ps and Qs 🙏 You’ll notice how surprisingly human-like the responses are — and you may even feel compelled to be extra polite. I encourage you to speak to AI as you would to another person, but there are a few key differences: - **Interrupt** — Ocassionally your AI friend will go off on a tangent or will breeze by a topic you want to talk more about. You can interrupt by just talking, you don’t need to wait until they’ve finished. - **Ask for a different tone** — You can ask the AI to “take a more serious tone,” “speak slower,” or even “whisper” or be “sarcastic.” It’s a flexible conversational partner. ## Today’s task There’s no specific task today, except to get comfortable talking to ChatGPT. You could discuss how incredibly difficult text-to-speech was back in the 90s — when we first tried it on our home computer — compared to how smooth it is today. Maybe ask something playful like: > How can you be sure I’m not an AI? Ask me some questions that only a human could answer ## ✍️ Your personal stenographer Another great use for audio AI is quickly turning your thoughts into text — like an email, a letter, or a to-do list. It’s like having a transcription buddy that understands you, even if you don’t speak slowly or clearly. **Happy chatting!**

Lesson 6
# Roasting your friends, counting birds and dodging fines 🕊 A lesser-known but amazing feature of ChatGPT is its ability to recognize images. Like audio, it’s not something you’ll use every day, but when you do, it’s pretty impressive! You can access this feature by tapping the `+` icon next to the message box: This menu gives you three options: - 📷 **Camera** - Snap a picture with your camera - 🖼 **Photos** - Choose an image from your phone’s gallery - 🗂 **Files** - Upload any file (we’ll cover this in a later lesson) ## Yes, but why? 🤔 **Great question!** You might not use this feature often, but when you do, it’s a lifesaver. Here are a few ways I’ve used it: ### To double check... Remembering to add context (previously discussed) such as the current day and time — AI can help you quickly decipher something you might want a second opinion on. Like avoiding a fine. ### To rebuild 🥠 This saved a tantrum in our house, but this technique can also be used to get tips on how to fix an object without first trying to explain what that object is. ### To DIY 🧰 For example you could take a photo of your bike’s disc brake and ask AI how to stop the pads from rubbing. Or photograph a loose valve and ask AI what tools you’ll need to replace it. I’ve also used it while in the hardware store to quick-calculate things, like photographing a roll of tape and asking “will this cover a 2x2m plank of wood?” ### Or... I find this genuinely funny, perhaps more than I should. But you can use AI to “roast” photos of you and your friends — all in good humour of course! We’ve also done this to create 1920’s gangster names for people in old family photos. Surprisingly hilarious. *** Of course, AI can do things that humans struggle with, or cannot do. I once photographed a flock of birds and asked AI to estimate how many there were. Not easy for our human eyes, but AI nailed it. ## (Un)Blurred lines In this app, you’ll notice a blurred card on the home screen. Save it to your Photos, then upload it to ChatGPT and ask: > Describe this photo. Can you transcribe the text? Long-tap on the picture below, select `Save to Photos` and then use the 🖼 icon in ChatGPT to upload it: Let me know what you find! 🤓

Lesson 7
# Lord of the files 🗂 By the end of our first week, we’ll dive into file uploads, rounding off our exploration of input methods like text, voice, photos, and attachments. ``` Since saving and finding files can be tricky on phones, this might be a good opportunity to try ChatGPT on a computer. Just head to chatgpt.com, where you’ll find your chats in a familiar interface. ``` ## Understanding docs AI doesn’t just understand text or interpret photos — it’s also skilled at reading and analyzing long documents like PDFs, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. For example, you can upload something like [this 49-page PDF](https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship-subsite/files/our-common-bond-testable.pdf) from the Australian Government’s citizenship test and ask: > Summarise the contents of this document ### A bit of an expert 🐷 The strength of this feature is that once the document is uploaded, AI becomes an expert in that content. You can ask follow-up questions, like: > Ask me 3 questions that might be on the citizenship test You might even want to ask questions about things that are **not** in the file, like: > Are there any topics you’d expect to see in this document that aren’t covered? *** ## Real-World Use How you use this feature will depend on the documents you work with regularly. Here are a few examples from my own experience: ``` If you can’t download or upload a large file, you can always copy and paste the text. Just say, “Here’s a document I received, help me understand it better” and paste it in ``` ### Please read the terms and... 🥱 You know those long, boring terms and conditions for things like renting a car or opening a bank account? GPT excels at simplifying these. You could ask: > The valet company scratched my car—what does this document say about their liability? I recently uploaded the entire terms of service from a bank and said: > What are the exact steps to earn the maximum interest from the Saver account? It revealed hidden details I would have missed, which the bank was likely hoping I wouldn’t find! 💰💰💰 ### Digging through the archives 🪣 Just like yesterday’s bird-counting exercise, AI can easily sift through large amounts of data. For instance, you could upload 12 months of credit card statements and ask: > Is there seasonality behind my Waitrose purchases? Remember, AI works best as a **conversation**. Start with one question, and follow up as you explore further. If you’re dealing with spreadsheets or financial data, you can even ask for a graph based on your findings. *** ## Getting quizzy 😵💫 Feel free to upload your own documents and explore the possibilities. For a fun challenge, you could download the [Lawmakers guide to UK law](https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/sites/default/files/migrated/justice_-_law_for_lawmakers.pdf) (68 page PDF), upload it to ChatGPT, and ask: > Create a 5-question multiple-choice quiz based on this document and grade my answers I scored 3/5 — looks like I need to brush up on my parliamentary sovereignty knowledge! How did you do?

Lesson 8
# Preparing for a trip 🌊 Since tomorrow you’re heading out on a cruise with a fair bit of free time on your hands, let’s spend today getting ChatGPT set up to make the trip more comfortable and fun. ## Packing smart 🎒 You’re probably (hopefully) already packed, but AI can help you think of some extra items that might make those long ocean days even more calm: > What are some interesting or often forgotten items I should pack for a 12-day cruise? Feel free to make it more personal—mention any weather info, planned activities, or specific things you’re excited about. ## Prepare for dinner 🍽️ You probably already have a full itinerary, so there’s no need for AI to create a workout or relaxation schedule (unless you’d like). Instead, it could be fun to come up with some interesting conversation starters for dinner with other guests: > Give me a list of interesting conversation starters I can use at dinner with other guests. Having worked in hospitality I can tell you that most guests often stick to the same few questions, so when chatting with the crew, you might want to mix things up a bit: > What are some original questions I could ask the crew that will give me some insight into what goes on behind the scenes? ## Creating a cruise journal 📓✍️ In a separate chat, you could keep a daily journal of your cruise experiences. Rather than just writing notes, you can have AI help by prompting you with questions. Each day, you could say: > It’s day {X} of the cruise, ask me 3 questions to help me journal my experiences. Returning to the same chat each day will allow you to build a complete record of your journey. At the end of the cruise, we can explore some fun ways to use that full chat. ## Entertainment backup plan 🎮 Should you get bored, AI can be a lighthearted companion when books and activities run thin. Try: > Can you play 20 Questions with me? Or... > Give me a series of riddles to solve, starting easy and getting harder ### Some more ideas... - **Creative Writing Prompts**: "Give me a prompt for a short story, and let’s build the story together step by step." - **Guess the Song:** "Describe the lyrics or theme of a popular song, and I'll try to guess what it is." - **Would You Rather**: "Let’s play a game of Would You Rather with some fun, unusual scenarios." - **Two Truths and a Lie**: "I’ll tell you two truths and a lie, and you guess which one is the lie. You can also create some for me to guess!" This will keep your brain active, make those ocean days fly by and hopefully keep you exited about AI. Happy sailing 🫡

Lesson 9
# Climbing trees 🌳 travelling India and choosing a dinner spot Earlier, we talked about how AI can be especially helpful when you have the **beginnings** of a thought, an interest, or an idea — like mapping out a new trip or brainstorming a DIY project. AI can help turn those early sparks into a structured plan by suggesting next steps and refining your ideas. Today, we’re diving deeper into that concept, learning how to use AI to create clearer, more organized plans. ``` This technique is great for big projects like home renovations or major DIY tasks—but it’s just as handy for small decisions, like choosing where to go for dinner or how to spend a day off. ``` This approach is known as a **Decision Tree**. It’s a simple way to break a complex decision into smaller, manageable choices. When you use the term "decision tree" in your prompt, it encourages ChatGPT to ask clarifying questions, create pros and cons lists, and help you explore different branches of a decision step-by-step. ## 🗺 Remember, it’s a journey... By now, you’re familiar with how valuable it is to keep the conversation going. The strength of decision trees lies in your ability to continue the discussion and use the chat history as context. Instead of looking for a single answer, you’re **collaborating** with AI to explore the best solution together. ## Plan a trip to India 🇮🇳 Here’s an example of what a prompt might look like: > I want to plan a big trip to India, but I'm not sure where to go. Can you help me create a decision tree based on budget, distance, climate, and available activities? AI will then provide you with options based on your criteria. For instance, under **Budget**, you’ll get options for low, medium, and high budget trips. From there, you can refine the choices: > Mid-budget sounds good, but I'd like to stay coastal After a few interactions like this, you might find it helpful to dive deeper into a specific decision: > Create a decision tree for 3 weeks in Goa, focusing on how to get around *** ## Remix it! Some of the most interesting discussions happen when you change direction completely within the same conversation. For example, after planning your ideal holiday to India, you could throw in a curveball that you’d never want to bother a travel agent with: > Okay what if I stayed home instead? Options for using a similar budget? ## Possibilities AI can be incredibly useful for narrowing down broad questions, saving time by breaking complex decisions into manageable parts. Here are just a few ideas of when you might want to use it: - ⚖️ **Career decisions** such as evaluating potential career paths based on salary, experience, commitment etc - 💵 **Financial investments** like deciding between different investment options based on risk - 💊 **Health and fitness goals** such as evaluating medical treatment options by comparing side effects, costs, and effectiveness - 🚗 **Purchasing decisions** like evaluating different car models based on cost, fuel efficiency, and features Or, maybe you’ve just worked up an appetite from reading this: > I'm on a cruise ship. There are 29 restaurants and I’m hungry for dinner. Create a decision tree to help me decide where to eat.

Lesson 10
# Not your average essay Most discussions about AI focus on its writing capabilities — creating, shortening, translating, or summarizing content. Sure, AI excels at that, but that’s definitely not its most exciting feature 🥱 You **can** ask AI to whip up a poem about geese, write an essay on nuclear fusion, or even generate code for an app. But, let’s face it, you probably don’t need any of that. And even if you did, relying on AI for all your original content isn’t a habit you want to form. But there **is** one area of writing where AI could really help you — emails 📧 and messages 💬. Today, we’ll explore prompts to help you manage your communications without making AI do all the heavy lifting! ## The long message dilemma Ever received a lengthy document, a wordy email, or a rambling message you need to reply to? For those moments, try this prompt: > Summarize this into bullet points: {insert long message} Once you’ve written your reply, ensure you’ve covered everything with this: > Here’s my reply — have I addressed all the points? {insert your reply} ## Voice and tone If you’re unsure whether your message strikes the right tone, AI can help adjust it to match the vibe you’re going for. Try: - Make this more formal - Make this more fun and friendly - Help me sound authoritative but not bossy - Make this engaging for a 15 year old And if you’re communicating with someone from a different generation, you can even use AI as your personal translator: ## Emoji If your emoji game could use a boost, AI has your back! Just ask: “Add emojis to this message: {insert your message}” ## Get a second opinion AI isn’t just for writing—it can also analyze your content, offering feedback and constructive criticism when you need it. For instance: - **🤔 Perception:** What level of subject matter expertise does the author (that’s you!) demonstrate? - **✍️ Response:** What tough questions could someone ask in response to this? - **⭐ Quality:** What’s the weakest part of this argument/pitch/idea? *** ## Instagram Alright, there are **some** instances where writing original content isn’t a huge priority — like Instagram captions. If you’re not feeling creative, upload a pic and try: > 🖼 Create an Instagram caption for this photo that’ll get lots of likes and shares ❤️

Lesson 11
# Time to learn something new! One of the best uses for ChatGPT is exploring topics you’re curious about but don’t fully understand yet. In my home, it's quantum physics; in yours, it might be energy eficiency, deep-sea exploration, or nano-technology. Whatever your interest, AI can be your guide! ## 1️⃣ Pick a topic The journey starts with choosing a topic that truly intrigues you. Today, let’s go with **space exploration** 🚀 as an example. When using GPT to learn, a single chat often turns into a detailed conversation with follow-up questions, so start with a fresh conversation. For instance: > I’m interested in learning about space exploration. Where do I start? ## 2️⃣ Break it down AI often begins broadly, offering a general summary. To make it easier to digest, break the topic into smaller parts. This can be done by guiding GPT with prompts like: > In this conversation, I’d like more detailed answers, please. ## 3️⃣ Stay curious Your learning depth depends on the questions you ask. Try different types of questions to get the most out of your exploration: - ☝️ **Ask for clarity**: “What does escape velocity mean?” - 👨🏼🏫 **Request simpler explanations**: “Could you break that down in simpler terms?” - 🤓 **Don’t shy away from “dumb” questions**: “Is there any credible evidence behind the moon landing conspiracy?” ## 4️⃣ Seek out resources ChatGPT isn’t limited to just text-based answers; you can ask for book suggestions, articles, or websites to deepen your learning. Try: > Can you suggest any good books or articles on this topic? Then when you find a resource that interests you the most, you can ask for a summary of that, too: > Give me a summary of 'Principles of Astrophysics: Using Gravity and Stellar Physics to Explore the Cosmos' by Charles Keeton Questions may keep popping up as you read, sparking even more learning. ## 5️⃣ Wrap it up Once you’re ready to pause for the day, wrap up by asking for a fun quiz or a quick summary: > Quiz me on what we’ve covered so far. *** ## Continuous learning, later This approach works for any topic you’ve explored with ChatGPT. Revisit past chats to pick up right where you left off. Tap the icon at the top left of the app, and choose a past chat: When you find your chat, try: > Let’s continue where we left off. Where were we? 🍏 Happy learning!

Lesson 12
# MAGA 🇺🇸 (Machine Assisted Growth & Advancement) **Fake news!** Today’s lesson focuses on using AI for effective research. In a world where news is distilled into soundbites and major media often lean toward particular narratives — finding a balanced perspective can be challenging. With ChatGPT, we can harness AI to prioritize accuracy, credibility, and a neutral outlook. Today we’ll learn how to use AI to evaluate sources through examples and evidence, fact-check topics by cross-referencing sources, and use citations effectively. Importantly, we’ll leverage AI’s neutrality for unbiased insights. # 🗺 Guidelines When researching, distinguishing reliable information from misleading content is essential. AI can expedite and improve research quality, ensuring it meets high standards. Here’s how to avoid misinformation: ### Effective prompting ✏️ The clarity and depth of your questions affect research quality. Frame questions precisely and specify the type of evidence you need (e.g., historical data, scientific findings, statistics). ### Check your sources 🍝 Seek information from credible sources (e.g., academic journals, government websites, respected news agencies). Use AI to compare details from multiple reputable sources for consistency. In fast-evolving fields, like technology or science, prioritize recent sources (preferably within the last five years). *** ## Let’s get controvertial! Feel free to grab the nearest hot-button topic from your favourite news outlet. Or perhaps try: > I heard that crime rates in the UK are rising due to “soft” sentencing. Help me research this topic **Or** > Compare the economic impact of renewable energy investments over the past decade to fossil fuel subsidies. Which has shown more long-term benefits? ``` When ChatGPT provides responses with a blue ❝ icon, this indicates that the answer includes citations — click on these to view sources for transparency: ``` ChatGPT generally uses reliable sources: Government websites (e.g., NHS, CDC, Gov.uk), educational institutions, mainstream news organizations (e.g., BBC, Reuters, The Guardian, or other well-established news outlets), scientific and academic journals and specialized resources in topics like finance or history, such as Investopedia. ## Leaning into discomfort 🌶 While the first answer might confirm your views, AI’s true value lies in presenting neutral perspectives. Follow up with questions like: > Is there any evidence to the contrary? To deepen your understanding, explore cited sources, bring relevant quotes back to the chat, and scrutinize facts by cross-referencing. Of course, you might just end down an AI 🕳️🐇 which might not be a terrible thing when trying to understand a hot topic. > Present data showing how different criminal justice policies impact recidivism rates ## Wrapping it up 👽 The key to unlocking AI’s potential is curiosity, critical thinking, and a healthy dose of skepticism. And to end on a lighter note, try: > Help me convince an alien that Earth is worth visiting. Let me know what you ended up digging into. **Happy researching!**

# Everyday magic, spiders in hats and submarines 🎩 Over the last two weeks, we’ve covered a lot to help you make the most of AI. There’s always more to learn, but much of the magic will reveal itself as you keep exploring. Here’s a quick rundown of a few topics we didn’t dive into, in case you’re ready to go further: # Translation 🤟🏼 While we touched on translating slang, AI can handle more traditional translations too. You can type in any foreign text and ask for a translation: > Translate “Vous êtes arrêté pour nudité publique sur un bateau de croisière” into English please! 🗣 Or, use the voice function to get live translations. [Here’s a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2DFg53Zhvw) showing it in action. Plus, you can even upload a picture of a foreign sign to have it translated on the spot. *** # For storytelling 🌈 AI is a great storytelling partner if you give it some fun prompts. Try this: > Write a few silly paragraphs advertising a whimsical, imaginary product. Or go with one of these: - 🦆 Write a poem about an angry goose. - ⛵ Craft a funny story about a sailor named André. - 🌸 Summarize our last two weeks as a haiku. *** # Your extra parent 🧒🏼 Got kids who ask endless questions? AI can be your backup! If you’re hanging out with a little one, try starting a new chat: > I’m spending the day with Bodkin, he’s 4. Please answer as if you’re talking to him! Then you’re ready for those **“Why don’t bugs wear clothes?”** moments with kid-friendly responses. *** # Creating images Image generation is an exciting side of AI we didn’t cover because it’s a bit advanced. While ChatGPT (with DALL-E) isn’t the top AI for images, it’s fun to try. Here’s how: ## Conversational image creation At any point, ask ChatGPT to “Make a picture of…” and describe what you’d like to see in detail, like this: > Make an image of a spider wearing a tiny hat, in the style of high-def nature photography. You might get a fun, clipart-style result. But if you want realism, check out [Midjourney](https://www.midjourney.com/) for a market-leading experience, like this: ## Prompting with pictures For a unique twist, try using a photo as a prompt to inspire new images. This is especially fun for bringing kids’ drawings to life or creating quick, personalized illustrations to accompany a story. Simply upload a photo and let AI work its magic! ``` If ChatGPT doesn't produce the image you were hoping for you can say "Try again" or ask for more details like "give the spider a tiny beard". ``` *** # Writing code 🗒 You might not think you have a need for code, but I’ll bet you use spreadsheets. AI can help you write formulas, debug or even create entirely new sheets which you can download. Try: > Help me create a spreadsheet to track my investments, where I can enter contributions and the monthly balance, and it calculates growth automatically. *** Hopefuly these ideas showcase just how versatile AI can be beyond simple Q&A. And by now you will have learned how to write good prompts, so using the above techniques effectively will be well within your reach! 🎨 Bonne création d’images! ``` Remember: The trick to useful AI responses is to have a clear outcome in mind and be specific in your description. ```

Remember some of these tips as you continue your journey: - **Start with questions**: It’s best to engage AI when you have the formations of a thought, something you want to know, or a topic that needs to be unpacked - **Use AI to help you decide**: AI can assist in weighing pros and cons, comparing options, and providing data-backed insights to make decisions. Whether it’s picking a restaurant, making a work-related decision, or choosing the best travel route — let AI challenge you. - **Be clear about the outcome you expect**: Clearly stating what you want from the AI response helps it provide more targeted answers. For example, mention if you need a quick summary, a detailed explanation, or a list of actionable steps. - **Ask follow-up questions without needing to reframe the original question**: Keep the conversation going by asking follow-up questions that naturally extend your previous one. This way, you don’t have to repeat the background information, and AI can build on what was already discussed. - **Return to old chats to build on existing context**: Revisiting old conversations can save time. You can pick up where you left off, allowing AI to use existing context to provide even more insightful responses and a sense of continuity. - **Ask for more!**: Ask AI to elaborate, change detail of explanation, tone or level of expertise. Whether you want a simpler explanation, a more formal tone, or an advanced deep dive, you can ask AI to adapt. - **Content is key!** Paste as much content as you like, in whatever format or state of completeness and get AI to make sense of it. So if you have a jumble of notes, ideas, or incomplete thoughts, AI can help you structure, refine, and make sense of them, transforming chaos into clarity. *** # What’s next? Now you’ve covered the fundamentals, it’s time to make using ChatGPT second-nature! The key to success is repetition, so every day for the next month this app will give you a ⭐ **Daily Prompt** ⭐. If you have marked all lessons as complete ✅ then every time you come back you'll see something like this: Keep the momentum going!
